"Several mental illnesses, including schizophrenia and depression, are associated with decreased functioning of prefrontal cortex, which can be revealed via neuroimaging.
For the same reason, these illnesses are also associated with decreased
working memory ability. Interestingly, for schizophrenic patients, this
deficit appears more marked in visual rather than verbal working memory tasks. In childhood, working memory deficits are linked to difficulties in attention, reading and language."
